Background & Achievements
Calanach (Cal) Finlayson grew up in a remote glen in Northeast Scotland, where his love for adventure and the sea began early. He first set sail at age 14 with Montrose Sailing Club, quickly developing a deep passion for the sport. He now has a wealth of offshore experience including 2x Atlantic crossings, 3x Fastnet, 3x Middle Sea Race, Round Britain & Ireland and more.
As co-founder of Solan Ocean Racing and a world champion in doublehanded offshore racing, Cal is recognised for his calm leadership, tactical skill, and commitment to continuous improvement. Cal embodies the spirit of Unity Sailing — bringing not only expertise but also a genuine enthusiasm for coaching and empowering others. He believes in fostering teamwork, supporting fellow sailors, and sharing the joy of sailing with everyone he meets.
Whether racing on the world stage or mentoring new crew members, Cal's dedication to learning, growth, and unity inspires those around him.
What crews and owners say
★★★★★
Cal is the perfect mixture of knowledgable and approachable, while managing to maintain a sense of humour which is required when you are in a group of strangers who are in close quarters for a few days during the offshore race. He was always happy to advise and encouraged everyone to get involved and have a go, not just sticking us in one position for the whole duration. He didn’t expect perfection but aimed to help us progress both individually and as a team. He is a keen believer in ‘the crew helms’, and would help with bearings, navigation and explaining race strategy. He didn’t try to distance himself as an ‘instructor’ and when you have a long crossing, it was great to get time to sit down and have a normal one on one chat with him. The whole crew went for dinner in La Harve and we were joined by other boats, who he would happily introduce us to, helping us feel part of the racing community. I am sure that all of Unity’s instructors are great, but I look forward to getting to race under Cal’s instruction again soon.
★★★★★
Cal's coaching style is perfect. He gave detailed explanations of each of the roles on the boat and was happy to answer any questions. He let us make our own mistakes and then helped us to resolve them in a calm and clear manner.
